Port of Taranto - Dredging

Dredging of 2.3 bcm of silt in the ‘Molo Polisettoriale’ (container terminal) area for the construction of a first lot of the mud dump site functional to the expansion of the ‘V Sporgente’ (Pier 5) of the Port of Taranto

The project envisages the dredging of the wet dock, of the maneuvering area and of the mouth of the container terminal and the construction of the connected mud dump site, for the purpose of expanding the ‘V Sporgente’ pier (east side) to which the dredged silt will be transferred.

The purpose of dredging is to achieve environmental reclamation via the removal of contaminated silt, as well as to improve port activity by reaching a depth of -16.50 m so as to allow for the docking of container ships with capacity up to 18,000 TEUs compared to the 8,000 TEUs currently permitted. The mud sump site will receive only silt not hazardous at origin or rendered non-hazardous via treatments aimed only at removing pollutants, with the exclusion of processes aimed at immobilizing the pollutants via solidification/stabilization.

The silt that after characterisation prove to be hazardous, in fact, will be handled outside the mud dump site and, after treatment, transferred to another dedicated dump site.
