Port of Salerno – rail and road connections

Port of Salerno – rail and road connections

Salerno Porta Ovest is a completion project aimed at eliminating the current bottleneck caused by the city road junction between the A3 motorway and the port infrastructure with related embarkation on ro-ro ships. It envisages the construction of a double-barrel tunnel (northbound and southbound lanes) that in the northern portion connects onto Via Risorgimento just prior to the intersection with Via Cernicchiara and, in the southern portion, to Via Ligea at the rear of the trade port.

The entire GP consists of two functional stages, only the first of which has been funded under NOP ‘Networks and Mobility’ 2007-2013. The project includes the construction of a double-barrel tunnel (northbound and southbound lanes), i.e.: a) The Northbound lane tunnel – total barrel length 2,493 metres; b) Southbound lane tunnel - total barrel length 2,469 metres. The typical cross-section of the bored tunnel has an average internal radius of 5.90 m and an excavation area of about 130 m2.

The average longitudinal slope of the two galleries is about 4.5÷4.8%. The effective width of the lanes, road side verges included, equals 8.25 m, and service sidewalks 0.60 m wide are also envisaged.

Palermo-Messina doubling - Fiumetorto - Ogliastrillo section

Palermo-Messina doubling - Fiumetorto - Ogliastrillo section

The project is a phase of the entire track doubling project for the Palermo – Messina railway line, currently undergoing the works for the completion of the previous functional phases and the new upgrading works.

The project concerns the doubling of the railway tracks running between the stations of Fiumetorto and the Ogliastrillo interconnection. More specifically, it envisages the completion of the route affected by the doubling by finishing the activities already started in phase 1, so as to be able to activate the double-track connection along the entire section from Fiumetorto to Lascari and along the entire section from Lascari to Ogliastrillo.

Speeding up of the Catania-Siracusa (CT-SR) route - Bicocca -Targia section

Speeding up of the Catania-Siracusa (CT-SR) route - Bicocca -Targia section

The project consists of the 1st functional block Bicocca – Augusta, that corresponds with Phase 2 of the GP

The implementation of the Bicocca–Augusta section entails the following main works:

  • 7 route variants;
  • overhaul of the existing works in order to ensure their durability;
  • restoration of the water management works (diversion ditches, delivery channels, etc.);
  • escarpment stabilization works (riveting, retaining walls, scaling with stone blocks, etc.);
  • underpassage, stairs, ramps in the Lentini station;
  • implementation in the station structures of escape tracks;
  • creation of technological niches inside the Valsavoia tunnel;
  • adaptation to the minimum requirements envisaged by Min. Decree 28/10/2005 “Safety in railway tunnels” for the existing 1519 m long Valsavoia tunnel;
  • construction of 3 new flyovers and of 2 channel bridges.
Additionally, the project envisages works on the systems in:
  1. Stations: Lentini Branch (on the CT-SR line it acts as shunting yard) (km 248+761) and Lentini (km 254+315)
  2. Shunting yards: (the structure of Passomartino has already been eliminated during the DTP works); Agnone di Siracusa (km 263+490); Brucoli (km 274+979).
  3. The project works envisage all of the interventions on the safety and signaling systems, telecommunication systems, electric traction and superstructure, as well as noise mitigation operations, in some sections via the application of noise barriers and in others via direct intervention on the receptors.
